A new luxury, adults-only resort in the Maldives will soon feature the world’s largest underwater restaurant.
Set to open in November, the Hurawalhi Island Resort will showcase the “5.8” undersea restaurant, named for its depth of 18 feet below the lagoon.
The restaurant, accommodating up to 16 guests, will offer a unique dining experience with a transparent domed ceiling, providing views of the surrounding marine life as diners enjoy a multi-course tasting menu.
Constructed in New Zealand over 10 months, the 410-ton structure was transported to the Maldives by cargo ship and carefully submerged earlier this year.
Guests will access the restaurant by entering a small hut and descending a spiral staircase.
Executive chef Shannon Batten, from New Zealand, will oversee the resort’s cuisine. Batten has previously cooked for notable figures such as Bill Clinton, British royalty, Rod Stewart, Bob Geldof, Neil Young, the Rolling Stones, and various heads of state.
The resort will feature 90 villas equipped with modern amenities, including king-size beds, air conditioning, internet access, private porches, and flat-screen TVs.
Hurawalhi Island Resort and Spa is located in the Lhaviyani Atoll and is set to open in November.
